Receptive aphasia is an impairment of the understanding of language. This usually occurs because of damage to Wernicke's area, so it is sometimes referred to as Wernicke's aphasia. The term receptive aphasia is actually slightly misleading because the condition also affects aspects of speech output. A number of classification systems are used to describe the various presentations of aphasia. One of the most common is based on the pattern of impaired language abilities. Using this system, aphasia is categorized as either nonfluent or fluent, based on characteristics of spoken language expression (Davis, 2007; Goodglass & Kaplan, 1972). Aphasia is often classified as "expressive" or "receptive", depending on whether there are difficulties with understanding or expressing language, or both.
