The peripapillary glia of the optic nerve head in the chicken
The cytoskeleton is one of a kind to eukaryotic cells. It is a powerful three-dimensional structure that fills the cytoplasm. This structure goes about as both muscle and skeleton, for development and security. The long filaments of the cytoskeleton are polymers of subunits.
IF proteins form elongated dimers based on the coiled-coil structure within their central ‘rod’ domain. Proteins of the intermediate filament (IF) supergene family are ubiquitous structural components that comprise, in a cell type–specific manner, the cytoskeleton proper in animal tissues. Intermediate filaments (IFs) are cytoskeletal structural components found in the cells of vertebrates, and many invertebrates. Homologues of the IF protein have been noted in an invertebrate, the cephalochordate Branchiostoma. Intermediate filaments are composed of a family of related proteins sharing common structural and sequence features. Intermediate filaments are composed of linear subunits that wrap around each other and interact very tightly.
The relative contents of contractile (myosin and actin) en A cytoskeletal structure that forms a distinct elongated structure, characteristically 10 nm in diameter, that occurs in the cytoplasm of eukaryotic cells. The plakin family of cytolinkers interacts with intermediate filaments (IFs) through plakin repeat domain (PRD) and linker modules.

The rod is a parallel coiled-coil of two α-helices, usually about 47 nm long (Fig. 35-3A). Intermediate filaments have an average diameter of 10 nanometers, which is between that of 7 nm actin (microfilaments), and that of 25 nm microtubules, although they were initially designated ‘intermediate’ because their average diameter is between those of narrower microfilaments (actin) and wider myosin filaments found in muscle cells. Structure of Intermediate Filament Subunits Each intermediate filament protein isoform has a unique amino acid sequence, but all have a rod-like domain between head and tail domains of variable length at the two ends.

They play an important role in providing mechanical strength of the cell and tissue, growth and regeneration, cell survival and apoptosis, and finally cell migration. In general, intermediate filaments serve as structural elements, helping cells maintain their shape and integrity. For example, keratin filaments, the intermediate filaments of epithelial cells, which line surfaces of the body, give strength to the cell sheet that covers the surface. 2015-02-01 · Intermediate filaments (IFs) result from a key cytoskeletal protein class in metazoan cells, but currently there is no consensus as to their three-dimensional architecture.
