Wertenbaker is known for using ancient stories and history to send messages to modern day audiences, however to do so, she must adjust them. The Love of the Nightingale is based on a Latin narrative poem by the Roman poet Ovid, as part of his collection of 15 books and over 250 myths called “Metamorphoses.” First published in 8 AD, Nightingale ’s story begins with two Athenian sisters who vow to stay together even after the older one, Procne, marries Tereus, the King of Thrace, and sails far away to his land. The play takes a feminist look at the ancient tale. The Love of the Nightingale is a play that illustrates the central themes of silence and questions, set on the backdrop of war, power, and the differences between the sexes. I really enjoy I can best describe the main themes of Wertenbaker's play with the famous lines from Hamlet: "to be or not to be. The Love of the Nightingale is always one of the first plays I recommend to anyone.
